Siegfried Sassoon
Siegfried Sassoon CBE, MC (Clare, 1905) described the horrors of the trenches of the first world war in his poetry, satirising patriotic pretensions and jingoism. A long time friend of E M Forster, Siegfried enjoyed love affairs with Ivor Novello and Prince Philipp of Hess and, for many years through the 1920s and 1930s, the aristocratic Bright Young Thing Stephen Tennant.
