Samuel Chawner
Dr. Samuel Chawner (Girton, 2008) is an emerging international leader in the field of children and young people’s mental health research, working at Cardiff University’s Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics & Genomics.
He was recently bestowed the prestigious Wellcome Trust Career Development Award, providing funding to significantly advance research into childhood eating disorders. His research on child mental health has been published in internationally renowned journals including Lancet Psychiatry and the American Journal of Psychiatry.
Samuel is passionate about science communication and has co-produced creative arts-based engagement events, at high profile events such as Greenman Festival, to open up public conversations on child mental health. His work has been featured on BBC news, and highlighted in Welsh Government and Child of the North policy reports. Most recently he worked with the charity Beat on their Eating Disorder Awareness Week campaign.
Samuel is a member of the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics LGBT+ group, and an important part of his work at Cardiff University is to promote an inclusive research culture and provide support to early career researchers. This year he won Health and Care Research Wales Research Rising Star Award for his commitment to diversity and inclusion in research.
