Søren Hough
Søren Hough (Churchill, 2019) completed a PhD in Biochemistry in November 2023, having led a project to characterize a new developmental disorder and its underlying genetic drivers.
Søren regrets that he spent a lot of his time at Cambridge hiding his bisexuality from colleagues; while he found some to be incredibly kind and supportive of LGBT+ rights, others were openly hostile to queer rights and advocacy.
While at Cambridge, Søren started the Marie Goldsmith Project, an effort to bring the life and work of 20th century radical biologist Marie Goldsmith into the 21st century. Goldsmith was an integral figure in the history of radical politics and a foundational voice in comparative psychology. As Co-Lead of the Project, Søren has won multiple grants and delivered talks at universities around the world. This initiative is driven by the desire to bring a crucial historical female thinker out of obscurity for a modern audience.
An accomplished science communicator, Søren has delivered talks and papers on subjects like the ethics of genome editing, always with a focus on the just and equitable use of these technologies. He recently spoke at an event hosted by Jnetics, the Jewish genetics charity. He speaks up on these topics, in part, because his identity as a queer Jew places him and others like him in the crosshairs if eugenics resurfaces in mainstream politics.
