Nicholas Hytner

Sir Nicholas Robert Hytner (Trinity Hall, 1974) is a theatre, film and opera director, and, according to the New York Times, “a gay, Jewish boy from Didsbury”

From 2003 to 2015, he was Director of the National Theatre in London, directing plays by Shakespeare and Alan Bennett as well as classical and new plays. He has won three Olivier, five Evening Standard and three Tony awards.

 

He is best known for his work on The History Boys (2006), The Crucible (1996) and The Madness of King George (1994). Sir Nicholas was knighted in 2010.
