Nicholas Allen
Nicholas Allen KC (Emmanuel, 1990) is a barrister and judge, and Chair of the UK Association of LGBTQ+ Judges.

A former President of the Union Society, Nicholas graduated from Emmanuel with BA and LLM degrees in law, and was called to the Bar in 1995. He was joint Chair of the Bar Lesbian and Gay Group (‘BLAGG’) in the late 1990s.
Joint Head of Chambers at 29 Bedford Row, a set of barristers that specialises in financial remedies, Nicholas is also a Door Tenant at St. Ives Chambers in Birmingham. He has sat as a Deputy High Court Judge in the Family Division since 2022, having been appointed a Recorder sitting in the Family Court in 2016. Nicholas took Silk in 2018. He sits on Middle Temple’s LGBT+ Committee, and was recognised as a “gay pioneer” upon his election as a Bencher of Middle Temple in 2022.
He leads on ED&I for his chambers. Their outreach includes work with Queen Mary University, the most ethnically diverse of all Russell Group universities. Nicholas has spoken at Queen Mary’s LGBT+ events to encourage greater diversity in applicants for pupillage. He has also mentored a number of LGBT+ applicants for pupillage.
